RV Air Conditioner Running but Not Cooling? Start With These Observations

When an RV air conditioner runs but cooling is weak, first confirm airflow, filter condition, power conditions, thermostat settings, and whether ice is forming. Arizona heat affects performance, but poor airflow, electrical trouble, control faults, or refrigeration problems may also be involved.

Confirm what the unit is doing

Note whether the compressor and indoor fan appear to run, whether the symptom affects one unit or all units, and whether the air starts cool and then warms. Avoid relying only on the sound from the roof.

Check airflow without opening energized equipment

A blocked return, dirty owner-serviceable filter, closed vent, or obstructed discharge can reduce performance and contribute to freeze-up. Follow the RV and appliance manuals for accessible maintenance.

Look for freeze-up patterns

Ice can restrict airflow. A unit may cool initially and then deliver less air. Shut it down and allow it to thaw rather than forcing continued operation.
