Before sustained Arizona heat, check air-conditioner airflow, electrical connections, batteries, roof and exterior seals, freshwater systems, shading, ventilation, and an emergency plan. Heat affects the whole RV, not only the air conditioner.
Reduce heat before asking the AC to remove it
Shade appropriate windows, close gaps, manage door opening, start cooling earlier, and follow safe ventilation practices. Do not block appliance vents or required airflow.
Maintain air movement
Clean owner-serviceable filters, keep returns and discharge vents open, and make sure stored items do not restrict airflow. Watch for freeze-up or changing fan performance.
Respect the electrical load
Air conditioners and other appliances can create substantial demand. Inspect shore-power cords and connectors for damage and stop using hot, discolored, loose, or melted connections.
Check batteries and charging
High temperatures accelerate battery aging and affect charging behavior. Inspect accessible connections and follow the battery manufacturer’s ventilation and maintenance guidance.
Inspect roof and sealants
Sun and surface heat age exposed materials. Look for visible changes around penetrations, edges, vents, skylights, and accessories without walking on an unsafe roof.
Protect water systems
Heat can affect hoses, stored water, pumps, and fittings. Look for leaks, protect exposed components as appropriate, and keep drinking-water practices sanitary.
Make a backup plan
Know where people and pets can go if cooling fails. Thermometer alerts can help, but they do not replace safe supervision.
Safety first
An RV can become dangerously hot quickly. Protect people and pets first. For electrical burning, propane odor, fire, or immediate danger, leave the RV and contact emergency services.
